An easy top 10 list for year end blogging

Looking for some easy juice and content for your year-end blogging? Make a top 10 list of the best posts for the year as found in your Google Analytics traffic stats. (you are using Google Analytics, yes?) Here’s how.

Start a new blog post, obviously.

Go into Analytics. Choose Content > Top Content.

Top Content - Google Analytics

Select your date range to be the entire year. (it’s the little grey arrow on the far right)

Hit Apply. You’ll get a nice list of your top pages. Bonus – if you use a Year/Month/Day format in your URLs and post titles, you can filter just posts for the year.

Top Content - Google Analytics

See each of those little arrowed boxes next to the numbers on the left? Those are links to your posts. Just construct a bulleted list in your blog post of your top 5/10/whatever posts, right click each box, and paste the URLs to your blog post.

Here’s an example of the top 10 Marketing Over Coffee posts for the year:

  1. Synchronizing Social Networks eBook
  2. Interview with Mitch Joel
  3. Newsletter #1
  4. Putting Up, Shutting Up, Getting Data
  5. Discussion with David Meerman Scott
  6. Wash Your Produce
  7. Twitter Slowdown, Google Wave, Palm Pre
  8. Get a Free eBook
  9. Wonder Wheel, Duplicate Content Penalties
  10. Still the Best Mraketing [sic] Podcast

This kind of list is incredibly popular, easy to construct, and built on reliable data from your Analytics account. Take it to the bank before the New Year!

12 Days of MoC: Day 12

On the twelfth day of Marketing Over Coffee, you set up your non-profit of choice…

A game plan

…written down, of all the stuff you gave them and what they have to do next. All of the sites, services, and accounts need to be maintained and specific tasks given out to the folks who will be inheriting what you’ve done for them. Social networks need to have their presence built, mailing lists need newsletters, web sites and blogs need new content. You’ve done great things for the non-profit in the last 12 days and now it’s up to them to keep the momentum going that you’ve started.

12 Days of MoC: Day 11

On the eleventh day of Marketing Over Coffee, you set up for your non-profit of choice…

Accounts on the major social networks

… making sure that each network has an appropriate username reflecting either the name of the non-profit or the clever domain name you set up in Day 2. Of course, you make sure that each profile page has conspicuous links back to the charity’s web site, and you synchronize the non-profit’s mailing list from Day 6 with the social networks to catch existing “friends” of the organization.

… and served them up on the agency web site to track which of the 11 versions of pitches solicits the most donations online. Google Website Optimizer automatically serves up all the variations you’ve created (use multivariate so you only have to vary copy and not buttons, navigation, or theme/template) and tracks to see what’s working best.
